Elders
An elder is a man who meets biblical qualifications, are affirmed by the congregation as an elder, and
leads the congregation by teaching the word, praying for the sheep, and overseeing the affairs of the
church. The New Testament teaches the local church has a plurality of elders. (1 Timothy 3:1-7; Titus
1:6-9; James 5:14; 1 Peter 5:2-3)

Deacons
Deacons are servants by definition. Deacons are biblically qualified persons who serve the church by
caring for its practical needs. A deacon is nominated by the congregation, examined by the elders and
affirmed by the congregation. Deacons should seek to facilitate the church’s ministry by caring for its
physical needs in a way that promotes unity and godliness. (1 Timothy 3:8-13)
